If you need to turn in a hurry, or need to move sideways this is the stroke for you.
Lean slighly out to the side and plant your paddle parallel to the canoe straight beside you. Then pull it towards your body.
Because this is such a powerful stroke it is almost always preferred over a pry stroke for anything but the most minor corrections. Just switch sides and you can make your end of the canoe go whichever direction you want.
