Tie A Mountaineer's Coil
Howdy Stranger
Detailed Description
This method of coiling a rope is very traditional.  It is also called the Alpine Coil.

However, many people do not prefer it because the coiling tends to cause twists/kinks in the rope.

The advantages are that it makes a nice circle that can be carried on a shoulder like a beauty queen sash.  It is also easy to attach to a backpack.  Another bonus is that it can be used to as an improvised carrying seat to help 2 people carry out a third person that can't walk.  Because of these advantages and because it has a long tradition it is worth learning even if you use a different coiling method most of the time.
