If you have a second canoe this is usually the preferred method of getting back in a capsized canoe in flat water or even slow moving rivers.

Bring the capsized canoe upside down up to the middle of the still upright canoe.  Lift the end and drag the canoe sideways until it is completely out the water and drained.  Then flip it over so it is upright and put it back in the water. 

After both canoes are in the water help support the canoe from the opposite side the someone climbs out of the water to get back in.
